Things We Never Got Over is a book that is too long at first, just feels right and incredible half-way, and too short after finishing it. You just keep wanting more. Lucy Score gave us a grumpy and broody barber, Knox, who just likes to take everything alone. He doesn't indulge in any drama except when he can't help himself when he meets Naomi.
Naomi is running away from her wedding and finds herself in a strange town to help her eveil twin. Unbeknownst to Naomi, she became jobless, homeless, carless, and with no plan when her sister stole her car and money and left an 11-year-old niece she didn't know existed.
Things We Never Got Over is definitely a book I can't get over. We've got a grumpy but broken hero, Knox, and a full of sunshine-y personality, Naomi. You know already that this is serving the Grumpy and Sunshine trope, and that's my favorite trope ever! Honestly, I rarely read—or have never read rather—a book with small town romances. This book made me fall in love with it.
Let's talk about Knox: I know Knox was described as hot, handsome, and grumpy. But in some parts of the novel, it's not grumpiness anymore. Knox is literally being a jerk to Naomi. He sometimes discards her harshly and then shows her love and chessy things. He's hot and cold, and that is definitely not my vibe.
Naomi is such a sweet and kind woman. She walked away from a toxic relationship and became a runaway bride. She carried all her "evil" twin sister baggage and became the guardian of her niece (I'm not saying Waylay's baggage). Even though she wasn't ready to be a guardian, she did everything she could to be a good example to her niece. I always get excited and upbeat whenever there's a Naomi-Waylay moment; it's just so special, sweet, and heartwarming. Naomi was, personally, a relatable character. I liked checking things off my list too. My life would be in a state of chaos if I couldn't write my to-do lists.
There are also some of my favorite secondary characters too: Sloane, Nash, Lucian, and Stef. Their interactions were fun, and I like how supportive they are. Now, I'm curious about their stories. I'm looking forward to reading more of Lucy's books!
The last few chapters were meh for me. I can't believe how Naomi decided to forgive Knox so easily. However, I appreciate that we saw Tina and had a chapter with her. Nonetheless, I still loved this book, and so I gave it four stars!
