Thoughts and Feelings: Beauty Water

"I just wanted to be loved."

Content Warning: Spoilers ahead!
The anime contains blood, death, bodyshaming and more.

Beauty Water is a South Korean anime directed by Cho Kyung-hun that was released in September of 2020. It follows Ye-Ji, a fat and ugly woman who works as a make-up artist for the famous celebrity Miri. Full of rage and jealousy, she shows and spreads hatred towards her. She hated how society only accepts people with wealth and beauty. Until an anonymous package was sent to her with a few bottles of Beauty Water.

Beauty Water has the power to melt your skin, helping you lose weight and reshape your appearance. Ye-Ji took her opportunity to make her dream come true: to be beautiful. Little did she know that the more she shines, the more darkness is there to hunt her. She finds her life more in danger the more she desires to be beautiful.

Beauty Water is absolutely gory and creepy, but the animation was lovely. When it comes to anime, Japan earned the title, and South Korea's power was in their dramas. But Beauty Water proved South Korea's animation industry is ready to fly high.

THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS 🧠

  • Insecurities are seen through the screen.
There's a scene where Ye-Ji is browsing online and throws hate at Miri. It shows how most of the haters' hate is a reflection of themselves.

Miri' s beauty is Ye-Ji's insecurity.

I came to realize that someone's hatred for you is their own insecurity. You can't control the haters because they can't even control themselves. They won't love and accept you because they cannot do it with themselves.

  • Beauty-Privilage

My gosh, do I need to say more? The whole movie shows how beauty is a privilage. You can have things you want easily. They look at you differently if you have that face. It shows how "ugly" people struggle with bullying and unfair treatment.

Through the old Ye-Ji, the people around her acted differently. They looked at her full of disgust and wouldn't even help her when they should. Despite that, I can see that Ye-Ji is safe from disrespectful and sick-in-the-head men.

But after the beauty water, everyone's eye is on her! She became beautiful and received a handful of privileges using her beauty. With free entrance to a high-end bar, free beer whenever she likes it, and more. But the security she felt instantly vanished because she was seen. She is seen with sparkly eyes and dangerous eyes. Everything has its own cost.

  • The plot was sick!

The plot left me shocked. From the first time I saw the antagonist, I already had a feeling that this fella was suspicious. But the plot twist was wicked and so sick! It was gory and
bloody. So, I suggest watching this if you can handle a bathtub of blood, because it has a lot.

OVERALL THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS 💡

Beauty Water was a fantastic anime! It was gripping and wide-eyed shocking with a bloody twist. And I definitely love this. It's been so long since I watched an anime, and Beauty Water gave me the life and energy to watch anime again.

Beauty Water is an anime with a concept about beauty and how it dominates the world and is a contemporary serious issue in Korean society.

For lovers of Paprika and Perfect Blue, Beauty Water, a bone-chilling and frightening anime, is a suitable and awesome recommendation for you!
