These past few weeks, I've been reading books based on what mood I'm in. As a mood reader, my reading preferences are based on what my inctict and mood tell me. Maybe I'm in the mood for cheesy and fluffly romances, or mysteries and thrillers, smutty romances, and more.
One of my struggles, especially since I'm currently experiencing it right now, is when I don't know what I'm in the mood for. I tried reading a romance a minute ago, then switched to historical fiction, put it down, and tried mystery and thriller. And I can't finish a single chapter! It's been my frustration lately. I badly wanted to get lost in a book, just escape, but then—I can't.And I officially declared that I'm in a reading slump. A massive one.
Since I'm in a reading slump, I hardly post book reviews these days, and to sum it up, I'm taking a break from reading. Taking a break and lying low is a form of self-care. Even reading—my number one hobby—needs to be given a pause. I've been reading a bunch of books one after the other. I'm the type of reader who does not spend days fully feeling and sinking into the book they've read. After reading one, I take a break for an hour or so, then pick up another one.
You can say that somehow it caused my reading exhilaration. Yes, I get tired on reading.
So now, I'm taking a pause. A temporary break from reading I think I will get back to it once my research and work are finished. In the mean time, I'll let myself enjoy some things that I rarely do: watching movies and dramas.
This post is kind of an update for my blog and is a discussion one. Here are my proven ways to combat a massive reading slump.
A Massive Reading Slump: Five Ways to Combat It
1. Take a break
And have a KitKat—lmao no. I can't help myself from writing that one. Taking a break might be hard for us, bookworms. But I think it's a must. Reading is kind of an exercise for our brains, just like in physical activity. You should take a rest too.
2. Watch a movie, a television series, a drama, or an anime!
Any form of entertainment (that reading isn't part of) can definitely help. Don't be afraid of binge-watching that drama! Immerse yourself in a form of entertainment in which your brain and creativity are not in charge.3. Take up new hobbies or learn a new skill
Reading might be your number one hobby, or maybe not. But try to do it and also be steady with your other hobbies. like journals, diaries, crochet, or embroidering. Or you can learn another skill and make it your hobby! It's fun and engaging for your mind, and maybe it will bring back your mood to read again.
4. Get some fresh air.
I mean, where do you usually read? Your room, living room, or maybe your designated reading spot. Try to go outside (but be safe, COVID is still in there) and interact with people around you. Play and walk your pet, take a run, feel the grass and ground underneath your feet. Feel the air and appreciate your surroundings; explore the places you might have missed and usually don't bother to pay attention to.
The world in fiction is lovely. But in our real world? Where do you have the power to change, to help, and heal it? You were the main character, right?I think this is much lovelier.
5. Sleep. We all need it.
Don't lie to me. I know you barely sleep these days because I do too. I'm sure you've been awake and reading until 3AM and found yourself sleeping only 3-5 hours a day. Take a rest and sleep well. You might find yourself waking up and in need of a good book. These are my five ways to combat reading slumps, I hope it helps you, even in small ways. Take a break and rest well, bookworms!
On a reading slump,
