I was about fourteen. We were in his house, arguing, both of us bristling with half-baked knowledge from the books we had read. I don’t remember what this particular argument was about. But I remember that as I argued and argued, Okoloma looked at me and said, ‘You know, you’re a feminist.’
Are you a feminist? Because Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie suggests in her collection of essays, We Should All Be Feminist, that you should be and we all should be one.
I really think feminism is the most misunderstood word of today's generation. Feminism is not tantamount to being a man-hater. Female feminists are not feminists simply because they are unsatisfied and unable to find a husband.
I sincerely believe feminism is a moral belief that everyone should be treated in the same way with no discomfort and no discrimination. People should be attentive and give light to specific and particular problems of gender.
Gender matters everywhere in the world. And I would like today to ask that we should begin to dream about and plan for a different world. A fairer world. A world of happier men and happier women who are truer to themselves. And this is how to start: we must raise our daughters differently. We must also raise our sons differently.
My own definition of a feminist is a man or a woman who says, ‘Yes, there’s a problem with gender as it is today and we must fix it, we must do better.’
All of us, women and men, must do better.
